Forecast glossary

Score (0–10)

A single number combining wind, cloud, precipitation, visibility and temperature for one day, weighted by the active profile. Computed only over 08:00–18:00 - a calm midnight doesn't make for a good day out. 10 is the best a day can score; a hill excluded by a hard gate (below) has no score at all.

Summit gust

Wind gust corrected from the forecast's grid elevation up to the hill's actual summit height. The correction factor is an invented multiplier, not yet calibrated against real station data - treat the absolute number with some caution, though it still tracks windier vs. calmer days correctly relative to each other.

Summit in cloud %

An estimate of whether the summit sits above or below the cloud base, from a standard meteorological approximation (a rising air parcel's condensation height) driven by forecast humidity. It tells genuine hill fog apart from a cloudy sky that never touches the top, but it's a theoretical estimate, not observed cloud, and can be too pessimistic on humid, still nights.

Freezing level

The modelled altitude where air temperature reaches 0°C, using a fixed lapse rate (temperature drop per metre of height). That rate is a reasonable average but can be badly wrong under a winter anticyclone, where the summit can genuinely be warmer than the glen.

Visibility

Forecast horizontal visibility in metres. Weighted most heavily in the Views profile, moderately in Safety, and least in Balanced.

Precipitation

A combination of forecast rain probability and amount for the day - a low-probability, high-intensity forecast and a high-probability drizzle forecast are treated differently, not just averaged together.

Profiles

Balanced, Safety and Views weight the same five factors differently. Safety weights wind hardest (minimise a bad day out); Views weights a cloud-free summit hardest (maximise actually seeing something); Balanced spreads weight evenly across all five.

Excluded / gate reason

A hard safety gate, not a low score - a day that fails one (for example, forecast gusts above the configured maximum) is removed entirely rather than marked down, and the reason shown states the hill's own value, not just the threshold it breached.
